Torrevieja is roughly half way between Alicante (47 kms to its north) and Cartegena (56 kms to its south). It has two large natural saltwater lagoons around it, which form the "Salterns of Torrevieja" considered the biggest salt lagoons in Europe. Todays town has grown out of an 18th century fishing village
