Alicante has about 310 000 habitants. The promenade the "Explanada de Espana" that runs along the harbour is one the most appealing features of the city. With palm trees, flower beds, and cafés. The old quarter of the city is a maze of small streets climbing the hill. Higher up are white-washed houses with panoramic views over the city and the bay.
Eating out is a favourite pastime here. Many restaurants prefer to serve traditional Spanish foods, both paella and fish dishes.
