Forat de la Mar Gateway, Calpe, Costa Blanca, Spain

Calpe was once a fortified and walled town and you can still see the remains of its ancient walls and defences. The Forat de la Mar was part of the original exterior wall that surrounded Calpe. In May 1813 the town was attacked by the French Army. They managed to open a breach in the wall here while attempting to overrun the town.

The Forat de la Mar gateway can be found in the Plaza de la Constitución and if you go through it through it , you reach Dos de Mayo street which takes you up a hill to Plaza Miguel Rosell and the old town.
