Peñiscola on the Costa del Azahar is 130 miles south of Barcelona. There is a 5 mile long sandy beach just north of the town with a promenade running all the way to Benicarlo. An 80 sq. mile nature reserve south of the town with rocky coves along the coast. Golfing at the Panorámica Golf Club (founded by Bernhard Langer) just 15 miles away.
Peñiscola is known as The City in the Sea. Its ancient fortress stands on a rocky outcrop jutting out into the sea.(incidently one of the settings in the epic film ‘El Cid’) and is surrounded by the white walled buildings of the old moorish town.
All the early Mediterranean civilisations back to the Greeks used the town. Today tourism is Peñiscola’s main source of income, but the fishing fleet remains, and you can watch it return to port in the late afternoon. The town and harbour areas around the castle have shops, restaurants and the local weekly market.
